WHAT IS COMPOST?

Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste currently make up 20 to 30 percent of what we throw away, and should be composted instead.

WHY DOES COMPOSTING MATTER?

Americans throw away approximately $165 billion worth of food each year, and for the average American family, that can be up to $2,200 per household, according to a recent study by the Natural Resources Defense Council. In Dutchess County, all of our waste is incinerated or landfilled, generating methane, a greenhouse gas that's 28 times more potent than C02. The amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere is the highest it has been in the last 3 million years. This is enhancing the greenhouse effect and making the Earth warmer than normal, which is affecting the planet's weather patterns, creating global warming and climate change. Here's your chance to do something good - take your food scraps and turn them into compost to be used locally for growing more food!
